A recent code leak has revealed that xAI, Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence venture, is quietly building an advanced file editor for Grok—its conversational AI assistant—with support for spreadsheets. This move hints at a broader ambition: integrating Grok directly into productivity workflows to rival tools from OpenAI, Google, and Microsoft.

The leak was shared by reverse engineer Nima Owji, who posted a screenshot of the feature in action. According to Owji, users will soon be able to interact with Grok while editing files, potentially enabling live document assistance, formula help, or data insights through natural language prompts.

In his words, “You can talk to Grok and ask it to assist you at the same time you’re editing the files!” His post on X (formerly Twitter) quickly gained traction, with many speculating that xAI is inching closer to launching a full productivity suite.

While xAI hasn’t officially confirmed the feature, it would mark a significant evolution of Grok’s capabilities. In April 2025, the company introduced Grok Studio, a collaborative split-screen interface designed for generating documents, code, and even browser-based games. It also rolled out Workspaces, a feature that organizes files and conversations into a centralized hub. This new leak builds on that foundation—adding real-time file editing to the mix.

If accurate, spreadsheet support could place Grok in direct competition with Gemini Workspace, Google’s AI-powered productivity platform for Sheets, Docs, and Gmail. Gemini allows users to interact with its AI assistant while editing documents—but it remains tightly integrated within Google’s ecosystem. xAI’s approach may offer broader file compatibility or cross-platform flexibility, giving it a potential edge for users seeking open alternatives.

The leak doesn’t clarify what additional file formats Grok’s editor will support, or whether this is part of a broader vision for a Grok-powered office suite. However, it aligns closely with Elon Musk’s long-term goal of transforming X (formerly Twitter) into an “everything app” — merging social media, payments, communications, and now productivity tools, into one platform.

With rivals like OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus and Microsoft’s Copilot already embedded in Office 365, and Google’s Gemini deeply integrated into Google Workspace, xAI’s entrance into productivity AI could reshape how users work across documents and data.

If Grok’s spreadsheet editor becomes a reality, it might mark a turning point in how we think about AI—not just as a chatbot, but as a hands-on collaborator inside our most-used digital tools.
