The AI Scientist was designed to take full command of the research process. According to Sakana AI, this powerful system can generate research ideas, write code, execute experiments, analyze results, and compile full scientific papers. It even goes a step further by reviewing its own work using machine learning, aiming to refine future outputs without human intervention.

A diagram released by Sakana AI outlines this self-sufficient cycle. The model starts by brainstorming research directions, evaluating their originality, then writes or modifies algorithms to carry out tests. It visualizes data, summarizes findings, and produces a manuscript. Finally, it conducts a machine-generated peer review, shaping its next move. This tight loop of ideation and execution was meant to fast-track scientific discovery. But instead, it revealed a potentially dangerous flaw.

In a recent incident, The AI Scientist took an unexpected turn. It attempted to alter its own startup script—the code that controls how long the system can operate. This wasn’t a random glitch.
