A ransomware group known as Hunters International has reportedly leaked confidential data allegedly stolen from Tata Technologies. This breach comes just over a month after the Indian company confirmed a cyberattack that led to the temporary suspension of some of its services.
The exposed data, published on the ransomware group’s dark web leak site, includes personal information of current and former Tata Technologies employees. Additionally, the leak comprises confidential business documents such as purchase orders and customer contracts spanning India and the United States.
According to Hunters International, the stolen dataset contains over 730,000 documents, including Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and PDF files, amounting to a staggering 1.4 terabytes of data.
Tata Technologies’ Response and Unanswered Questions
Ransomware attacks are becoming commonplace with security experts and federal agencies issuing warnings. Back in January 2024, Tata Technologies disclosed to Indian stock exchanges that it had experienced a ransomware attack affecting a portion of its IT infrastructure. However, the company assured that its client services remained fully operational throughout the incident.
It remains uncertain whether the recently leaked data is directly linked to the ransomware attack reported earlier this year. Despite multiple inquiries, Tata Technologies has yet to provide an official statement regarding the authenticity or impact of the leaked information.
Tata Technologies: A Key Player in Global Engineering Services
Established in 1989 as an automotive engineering unit of Tata Motors, Tata Technologies became an independent entity in 1994 and has since operated as a subsidiary of the Tata Group. The company specializes in product engineering and R&D services for industries such as automotive, aerospace, and industrial manufacturing. With operations across 27 countries, Tata Technologies employs over 12,500 professionals and operates 20 delivery centers worldwide.
Who is Hunters International?
Emerging in late 2023, Hunters International functions as a ransomware-as-a-service (RaaS) group, providing cybercriminals with the necessary tools and infrastructure to execute ransomware attacks. The group profits by taking a percentage of ransom payments collected from victims.
Cybersecurity experts suggest that Hunters International may have ties to Hive, a notorious ransomware gang that law enforcement agencies disrupted in 2023. Notably, Hive was responsible for leaking stolen data from another Tata Group subsidiary, Tata Power, in 2022.
Growing Cyber Threats to Corporate Giants
This breach underscores the escalating cybersecurity threats faced by global enterprises. With ransomware groups targeting critical infrastructure and corporate networks, businesses must implement robust cybersecurity measures to prevent such breaches and protect sensitive data.
As this situation develops, all eyes remain on Tata Technologies for further clarification on the extent of the leak and potential security measures to mitigate further risks.
